Want to drink Great Burgundy without the big price tag? Then look no further than this splendid Santenay from Vincent & Sophie Morey. I knew Bernard Morey, a celebrity in Chassagne Montrachet, and when he retired, sons Vincent & Thomas took over the vineyard. And the excellence continues. Perfect to drink now at 8 years old, this wine delivers a lot for a pittance! Mature, perfectly stored Burgundy direct from the Domaine.

Sophie and Vincent Morey both come from families of wine-growers. They set up their own domaine in 2006 and had their first harvest in 2007. When Vincent’s father, Bernard Morey, a leading personality in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, took his retirement, Vincent took over the a part of the holding. He already had twenty years of experience behind him. After studies at Beaune’s Lycée Viticole and work-experience in St-Emilion in the Bordeaux region, Vincent rejoined the family domaine in 1986. In the same year Sophie was vinifying her first vintage for the Ménager-Belland domaine in Santenay. “In my family,” Sophie declares with a smile, “the vines pass from mother to daughter.” Vincent and Sophie Morey treat their vineyards as if they were gardens. “Fine wines start with good grapes,” they declare in unison.

Enticing aromas of rose-petal, violet, currants and licorice. The palate is crisp with fine tannins, a firm backbone with nice minerality, darker fruits and a hint of fresh tobacco. These are all hallmarks of this vineyard. Rustic and powerful, in the context of Burgundy, the finish has fine concentration but it perfectly balanced and poised after 8 years bottle age. Santenay red wines show the true essence of red Burgundy at good price points and without demanding a lot of cellar time. With soils rich in limestone and marl, this is the home of well-constructed, hearty Pinot noir and represents a fantastic region to explore if you are just beginning your understanding of red Burgundy. And Les Gravieres is arguably the best vineyard in the region.
