Sumptuous Santenay

Want to drink Great Burgundy without the big price tag? Then look no further than this splendid Santenay from Vincent & Sophie Morey. I knew Bernard Morey, a celebrity in Chassagne Montrachet, and when he retired, sons Vincent & Thomas took over the vineyard. And the excellence continues. Perfect to drink now at 8 years old, this wine delivers a lot for a pittance! Mature, perfectly stored Burgundy direct from the Domaine. A few months ago I offered 2012 Santenay Gravieres from the Moreys that sold out instantly at $36btl. At $25btl, this one won’t last a few hours

VINCENT & SOPHIE MOREY

Sophie and Vincent Morey both come from families of wine-growers. They set up their own domaine in 2006 and had their first harvest in 2007. When Vincent’s father, Bernard Morey, a leading personality in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, took his retirement, Vincent took over the a part of the holding. He already had twenty years of experience behind him. After studies at Beaune’s Lycée Viticole and work-experience in St-Emilion in the Bordeaux region, Vincent rejoined the family domaine in 1986. In the same year Sophie was vinifying her first vintage for the Ménager-Belland domaine in Santenay. “In my family,” Sophie declares with a smile, “the vines pass from mother to daughter.” Vincent and Sophie Morey treat their vineyards as if they were gardens. “Fine wines start with good grapes,” they declare in unison.

This is such a different wine from the Santenay Gravieres I offered from the Morey’s just a few months ago. While that wine relied on power and grit, this wine is refined and elegant. It still has the classic Santenay rusticity, but that has mellowed now with time in the bottle. Today the wine has an understated nose of currant, red raspberry, Chinese tea and violets. In the mouth there are chalky but very fine tannins with plenty of crisp acidity still present. There is a tangy minerality on the finish with fresh tobacco, bittersweet chocolate that is understated yet complex. This is one hell of a Mature Burgundy for well under $25.00btl
