Grandiose Graves

Many years ago I met the owners of Chateau Simon who own property in Graves & Sauternes. I became an instant fan. The wines were superbly made with care and excellent quality for over six generations. Style and elegance and the words that come to mind when I think of this place. And outstanding value! These are wines of class and breed that sell for a pittance. And our prices beat everyone else on line.

The Dufour family has cultivated the vines and produced Barsac-Sauternes wine since 1814 on the unique soils of Château Simon. The ancestral know-how in winemaking has been passed from generation to generation and their vineyard holdings have expanded to the current total of 38 hectares, now including the appellations of Bordeaux, Graves and Barsac-Sauternes. Today, three generations of the Dufour family work together on the property and associate their talents to produce wines of excellent quality. Château Simon has followed the rules of “reasoned agriculture” since 1983.

The best white wines of Bordeaux come from the Graves Region. And they are usually quite expensive which makes this wine an absolute steal! A blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc & 50% Semillon this is a classic example of the appellation. Pretty straw color. Scents of pink grapefruit, orange blossom, lime zest & white peaches fill the glass. The bright and intense flavors of ginger, green pineapple, green apple and citrus jangle the taste buds and explode in the mouth with a complex yet harmonious persistence. The finish is long and savory and cleanses the mouth with fine acidity. Brilliant!

As a Burgundy lover, my favorite Bordeaux come from Graves and Pessac Leognan. They are the silkiest and most elegant wines produced in the region. This wine opens with aromas of crushed red and black currants, cassis, bing cherries and a dash of mocha. The palate is medium bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity that offers precision and harmony. A wine that seduces rather than display power. A wonderful wine that is stylish and elegant.

A beautiful pale golden color. There are youthful & fresh notes of apricot, mango, citrus and honeysuckle balanced by savory flavors of roasted nuts and fresh baked bread. The finish is vibrant and fresh with touch of mineral laced Crème Brulee. A bargain Sauternes that over delivers.
