Founded in 2008 by Palermo native Nino Bevilacqua, Terrazze dell’Etna is part of that new chapter of wineries that makes Etna such an exciting place to grow grapes and make wine today. This project started under the guidance of consulting enologist Riccardo Cotarella and has moved steady over recent years to marinating consistency in quality. The estate counts 36 hectares of vines including some ancient, pre-phylloxera cultivars. Great care has been taken to restore the volcanic stone dry walls that separate the various single vineyards.

The 2013 Etna Rosso Carusu is an 80/20 blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. This wine offers a soft and delicate approach that suits it very well. If offers both grace and power. The wine opens to a bright ruby color with aromas of wild berry, cranberry, ash and blue violets. This Etna Rosso embraces the freshness and the lean texture that characterizes this cool and often difficult vintage.

I tasted the 2010 Etna Rosso Cirneco (100% Nerello Mascalese) last year and had the chance to revisit the wine again. Since then, not much has changed although my impression is that it has started to flesh out nicely. It shows more spice coloring of cinnamon and clove this year. This is an austere and stubborn wine that plays its cards close to its chest. It reveals crushed stone, dark fruit and grilled herb with slow precision. These qualities bode well for its future evolution. So does the tannic management. The wine is stern, firm and structured. Fruit comes from 60-year-old pre-phylloxera single vineyard vines that have been pruned down to just two clusters per vine. Only 500 cases produced.
