Domaine de Montille

I first encountered the wines of Hubert de Montille in New York City back in 1988. At the time we were drinking wines from the 60’s and 70’s and some of the best examples carried a Montille Label. That is because Hubert, who passed away in 2014, and his son Etienne are noted for long lived wines. They chapitalize only enough to extend fermentation creating wines of lower alcohol but higher acidity, critical for long term aging. The wines are tight when young, but evolve into spicy, smoky, mouthfuls of enjoyment.

Domaine de Montille is known for producing wines of great aromatic purity, always favoring balance and elegance rather than power or extraction.
The wines are a classic expression of Burgundy, produced as naturally as possible and having an impressive capacity of guard because we think that only the time reveals the Great Wines.The current style of the estate remains faithful to the naturalness and classicism recognized in Hubert’s wines, some of whose vintages demanded a lot of patience, but Etienne strives to bring more openness into the bouquet in the reds, and more silky and smoothness in the textures without compromising the aging capacity of the wines.The estate is known with some others in Burgundy (Arlot, DRC, Dujac, Leroy, etc ..) to vinify regularly leaving a significant proportion of whole grapes that is determined each year for each vintage.

This wine comes from vines planted in the Côtes de Nuits, in the Côte de Beaune or in the Mâconnais, depending on the year. Chardonnay is the source of all great white wines in Burgundy. This “generic” Burgundy is from vines planted in parcels in Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, at the edges of the village appellations. This cuvée, the only blend from different villages in the line-up of the Maison, is a lovely surprise. Fresh, bright and focused flavors. The palate is marvelous with orange zest, dried pineapple, citrus lemon and even a touch of anise. There is a roundness in the mouth, really much too complex and intriguing for a generic white Burgundy. But what else would you expect from Montille?,

This is one of the best Bourgogne I have had in recent memory. It has more in common with a Village Volnay than a generic Burgundy. The nose is filled with violets, rose petal and ripe cherry fruit. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red berry fruit, well-judged acidity and a slightly chalky finish. I appreciate the precision here. Dark red berries, plums, spices and cedar linger on the effortless, long finish. When I tasted this with the sales rep I said ,”How much do you have?” There were only 5 cases left so I bought them all. Which meant I got to keep and drink the sample bottle! Which I did over the course of yesterday. Grab a case you won’t be dissappointed.
