Domaine Blain Gagnard makes wines of style, class and breed. The excellent vineyard holdings, very old vines and a minimalist approach to wine making work in concert to create some of the most masterful Chassagne Montrachet wines. But finding these wines can be difficult. I am happy to offer the best two wines of the 2017 Vintage. If you love White Burgundy, do not miss these wines.
Domaine Blain-Gagnard was formed in 1980 when Jean-Marc Blain (a Sancerrois) married Claudine Gagnard, youngest daughter of Jacques and Marie-Josèphe Gagnard of Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange. The couple runs this venerable domaine with the help of their son Marc-Antonin. Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard met while they were both studying oenology at Dijon. The estate’s vineyards come mainly from grandparents and other relatives of Claudine, along with a few purchases. The vines are planted in Chardonnay (55%) and the rest in Pinot Noir, with a small parcel of Passetoutgrain. They now control 20.5 acres of vines in Chassagne-Montrachet, including holdings in three grands crus: Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet.
*2017 Chassagne Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru
$89.99btl/$1079.88 per case
(Wine Spectator 95)
A spicy version and opulent, boasting buttered brioche, vanilla, peach, mineral and citronella flavors. Its creamy texture and harmony belie its complexity, but the finish is long and satisfying.
(Burg Hound 93) *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*
Whiffs of mineral reduction and spiced tea sit atop to the cool and pure aromas of lemon rind, apple and white flowers. There is excellent punch and ample minerality to the beautifully well-detailed flavors that possess outstanding energy that carries over to the compact and tightly wound finish. This is really good stuff that should drink well after only 5 or so years of cellaring but reward extended keeping. (6/2019)
*2017 Chassagne Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er Cru
$79.99btl/$959.88 per case
(Burghound 92) *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*
Smoke and petrol-tinged aromas offer up notes of white peach, lemon zest and a hint of apricot. There is once again excellent volume to the intense and vibrant medium weight plus flavors that possess a caressing yet muscular mouth feel, all wrapped in a lingering and balanced finish. This will need to add a bit more depth to merit my rating but the underlying material seems more than sufficient for that to occur.
