95pt Chianti Classico Riserva Under $30btl
Volpaia is one of those estates that can only exist in Tuscany. This medieval hamlet is worth a visit from a cultural and historical perspective alone. One of the banner estates of the Radda in Chianti subzone of Chianti Classico in Siena province, it is managed by the Mascheroni Stianti family: Giovannella, Carlo, Nicolo and Federica. Thanks to high-elevation vineyards, Volpaia’s wines are celebrated for their freshness and finesse.
Last year’s vintage, 2015, of the Chianti Classico Riserva was #3 on WINESPECTATOR wines of the year. To some, including us, the 2016 is even better. This is a classic vintage that captures the true essence of Sangiovese and that particular Tuscan terroir. This is a “CHIANTI LOVERS” wine that delivers immediate enjoyment but will age gracefully for well over a decade.
2016 Castello di Volpaia * Chianti Classico Riserva
Streamlined and elegant, this mid-weight red trots out notes of grilled herb and dark fruit nuances that segue to spice, tilled earth and savory tobacco, with great complexity. This 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva from Volpaia is still a bit closed and tight, but this beautiful wine boasts all the best qualities of this vintage. It shows elegance and power, two contrasting characteristics that only work well together in the world’s most achieved expressions. The most satisfying aspect of this Riserva is the crisp acidity on the close that keeps the palate refreshed and ready for the next sip. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2030.
